Astrology Selecting Your House System

The twelve sections of a natal chart, known as "houses," represent the various areas of interest and activity in your life. The division of these houses depends on the house system you or your astrologer employ. There are at least eight major house systems in use around the world, but in the United States, Placidus, Koch (pronounced "coke"), and Equal are the most common. These three systems all produce the same Ascendant (Rising Sign), but their Midheavens and house cusps are distinct.

The Placidian system is named after Placidus de Titus, its 17th-century creator. It is utilized by at least 80% of astrologers in the United States because it is the most well-known system and its house tables are widely accessible.

The Koch system is the second most popular home system in the United States. It originated in Germany and is named after Dr. Walter Koch, its first publisher. Both the Placidus and Koch systems yield the same ascendant, which is always the beginning of the first house.

Each system produces a different sign (or the same sign at a different degree) on the Midheaven. Placidus and Koch are "unequal" house systems that are susceptible to interceptions. Interception occurs when two opposite signs are each on the cusp of two houses and two other opposite signs are inside houses with neighboring signs on the cusps. However, in any given chart, the signals intercepted by Koch are not necessarily the same ones that Placidus would intercept.

The Equal house system is exactly as the name suggests. On each cusp, each house has the same degree, and there are no interceptions. Equal house systems are particularly advantageous for those born in the northernmost and southernmost latitudes, and this system is the most prevalent one used outside the United States.

No house system is superior to another, only unique. Astrologers choose the systems that they and their clients believe to be the most effective. In addition, they choose systems that are optimal for the types of astrology they practice, yielding the desired interpretive results.

Those who practice astropsychology, for instance, are more likely to choose Placidus, whereas those who practice Uranian astrology are more likely to choose Koch.

If you are uncertain about which system is best for you, try both or one of the other systems to determine which produces the most reliable results. That is the ideal home security system for you.
