Finding Life's Purpose Utilizing Three Steps Blog

One of the most difficult things we humans must face is understanding why we're here. By the end of this article, you should have a reasonably solid tool you can immediately utilize in your life, to help give it real direction. This is an step-by-step process of analyzing your feelings and options.

To help find your life's true meaning, please follow these basic three steps:

  • Understand the principle of choice

  • Defining your "underlying principle"

  • Utilizing this "underlying principle" to align your life

Understand The Principle of Choice

Norman Vincent Peale has this to say about the power of choice. “The greatest power we have is the power of choice. It is an actual fact, that if you have been groping under unhappiness, you can choose to be joyous, instead. And, by effort, lift yourself into joy. If you tend to be fearful, you can overcome that misery by choosing to have courage. The whole trend and the quality of anyone’s life is determined by the choices that are made”.

Making a decision is the most significant mental process, because it sends a clear message to your unconscious about what you really want. When your unconscious mind knows what it is you want, it will do whatever it takes to bring it about. What you want out of life is determined by the decisions you make. No one can stop you from achieving your goals if you set out to do it with all of your heart.

On the other hand, being unable to make up your mind leads to dissatisfaction, worry, and a muddled understanding of your own desires within your subconscious. Nonetheless, it is critical that you make your own decisions, ones that are in line with your genuine motivations, goals, and abilities. Many of us either allow others to decide for us or make choices based on what we believe to be 'right,' regardless of whether or not this aligns with our values. The only way to know if something is right for you or not is to pay attention to what your heart is telling you, but listen to your instincts and common sense.

Hence, to begin, jot down things that pique your curiosity; things you have always appreciated, which lift your spirits and encourage you to press onward in spite of setbacks. Do you enjoy engaging in creative or artistic endeavors? Are you someone who finds solace in the great outdoors? How about the ocean? Have you always liked being of service to others? Do you take satisfaction in creating a positive change in the world?

Whatever it is that interests you, write it down and answer these questions:

  • What thing do you love to do?

  • What is it that you love in this thing and why?

  • How could you do this for money, and make a living out of it?

Creating Your Underlying Principle

The next step is to study the list you just produced and find out if there is any repeating theme. Maybe, it is the contribution that continues coming up, or an effect to seek or offer love, or helping your parents cope with old age. Whatever it is, try to pinpoint the fundamental topic of the things you love to do, and try to put it in a brief and simple statement. This will be your ‘Mission Statement’. It may even be a quotation by a renowned person, or a thought that has impacted you. Of course, as you grow up, this phrase could vary, but its soul will remain the same. Now, write down your Mission Statement.

Aligning Your LIFE With Your Underlying Principle

The last part of this process entails creating a road map to your ultimate purpose and starting to make changes that bring your day-to-day activities into line with that purpose. Making these little adjustments to your routine will put you in a position to start putting this principle into practice on a daily basis. A few days of consciously focusing on this guiding concept of your life can make a big difference in how you feel about life in general. Organize your trip accordingly if you find that you thrive in the outdoors. Take the kids out for the day and see if that helps you regain some of your energy. If you find that you get satisfaction from assisting others, you should start looking for volunteer activities. On the other hand, you could decide that you want to find a different line of work or launch a new company that better reflects your values.

What you were looking for, then, is presented. The aforementioned instructions will lead you to your true calling. And keep in mind as you go through this that, “You were put on this earth to achieve your greatest self, to live out your purpose, and to do it courageously.” - Steve Maraboli
