Are we simply bodies with personalities? My understanding is that we are significantly more than that. Each of us possesses a superior quality. This higher aspect is typically referred to as the Higher Self. Others have also used the terms Oversoul and Overself to describe it.
Who or what is the Superior Self? The Higher Self is the aspect of our own intelligence and wisdom. Ironically, the Higher Self is impersonal and lacks a'sense of self' in the same way that our personality does. However, it serves as a guiding factor for the personality or ego.
Can this enigmatic higher self be reached? Yes, and this is typically accomplished via meditation or other altered states of consciousness.
A few words about myself. I discovered roughly ten years ago that if I am intensely contemplating a topic of spiritual inquiry, I will occasionally receive visions that attempt to answer my questions. The majority of visions are symbolic. Symbols and visions containing messages will be prompted into my consciousness by my higher self.
As an illustration of such transmissions:
Several years ago, I was pondering the nature of the reincarnation cycle. Will lost souls be eternally trapped in the underworld? According to numerous Eastern beliefs, beings who have not attained enlightenment will be trapped in an endless cycle of rebirth. I received a transmission from beyond my conscious mind out of the blue. It arrived as a "download" of images, symbols, and emotions. Very brief, split-second perceptions. My right hemisphere of the brain appeared to process the download. My brain attempted instinctively to decipher the transmission before I lost it. How can I be sure that it wasn't my imagination? To begin with, I do not think visually. I think linguistically. My consciousness was experiencing a 'dual-split' as a result of the transmitted images. Thus, the images are simultaneously superimposed on my visual perception of the surrounding environment. Well, a 'dual-split' in consciousness is not how my mind typically operates!
The background of the animated image was a light blue hue. There were lighter-colored rings or bands moving toward a center. Because the transmission was so rapid, I may have missed some crucial information. Nonetheless, here is my interpretation. Please understand that this interpretation was made by my physical brain. Consequently, I can never be completely confident in the accuracy of my interpretation:
The transmission is an attempt to correct errors or rather gaps in my comprehension of the grand scheme of things. The cycle of reincarnation is not intended to continue indefinitely. Eventually, everything will return to its Source or essence.
That transmission occurred many years ago, however. Since then, my understanding of this topic has been refined. However, the message was appropriate (based on my level of comprehension) at the time.
Together with the guidance of enlightened physical teachers, these vision transmissions from Higher Self have helped me tremendously to comprehend the dynamics of consciousness and the universe over the years.
